Man jailed for raping and killing woman
A MAN who raped and killed a young woman in a forest near a railway station in Anhui Province 15 years ago was sentenced to life in prison yesterday.
He was found guilty based on DNA evidence.
The 44-year-old convict, Liu Jiasuo, followed the woman at the railway station on the midnight of July 13, 1998. He tried to strike up a conversation and was ignored by the woman, Shanghai Railway and Transportation Intermediate People's Court heard.
Prosecutors said Liu attacked the woman and pushed her to the ground. During the assault, Liu covered the woman's nose with mud and raped her. After that, he put a brick on the woman's nose and left, prosecutors said.
The court heard the woman was suffocated. Her body was found by residents the next morning.
Police found semen and a hair in the victim's vagina, but failed to find the perpetrator at the time.
In 2003, police sent the semen and hair for a DNA test as they suspected another man. The DNA result was entered into the Shanghai Police Judicial Examination Center's database.
On April 21, 2012, Liu was sentenced to an administrative penalty for assault. Police collected his fingerprints and a DNA sample, which matched the samples from the 1998 murder scene, the court. He was caught on October 9.
