Man kills 7 puppies, spawning outrage
A MAN killed seven puppies by smashing them onto the ground in Putuo District on June 28, prompting outrage online after surveillance camera footage was posted on a website.
Three people – two men and a woman – came to a bicycle garage beside Building No. 23 in a residential complex on Tongpu Road about 9:40pm on June 28. The garage housed two mother dogs who were taking care of their newborn puppies. The footage shows a man who appears to be about 30 killing the seven puppies, which were less than one week old.
"The puppies are all in blood. One mother is shivering, and the other is walking around, whining in a frightened voice," said a witness, the Oriental Morning Post reported.
Some witnesses tried to stop the man, only to be rebuked: "Why don't you people show your love by taking these dogs back home to raise them? We've fed up with them barking," the man said, according to a witness who said the dog killer is one of the residents in Building No. 23.
One of the mother dogs had tried to rescue a pup by holding it in her mouth to escape. But she was stopped by the trio, a witness said.
Before the puppies were killed, some residents had been looking online for people interested in adopting them.
A property management official at the complex said he had received complaints about the barking and that he called police before the dogs were killed.
The local canine management officers came but didn't find the mother dogs, so they simply left without doing anything, the official said.
Angry animal lovers wrote a letter titled "Words for the murderer" and pasted it at the complex's entrance.
Stray dogs can still be seen everywhere in the complex.
