Man leaps off overpass, walks away
A man jumped off a downtown Metro station facility in the cold rain after quarreling with his girlfriend about noon yesterday but was able to walk away on his own, stunning onlookers.
Witnesses said he appeared to escape serious injury. The incident took place at 12:50pm, according to several witnesses.
The man, whose identity could not be learned, was heard in a quarrel with a woman believed to be his lover before he plunged from the outdoor, second-floor overpass that facilitates transfer between Metro Line 4 and 10 at the downtown Hongqiao Road Station.
He landed on the sidewalk in front of a KFC outlet inside the station compound.
"It's so horrible. I only bought an egg tart and happened to witness a man jumping from the overpass," said a web user online.
Others took out their smartphones and photos were spread quickly online, showing the victim crouching on the sidewalk with a collapsed bike lying by his side. Police were alerted to intervene.
Shanghai Metro management confirmed the incident and said the man later stood up and left by himself.
The jump did not interrupt Metro operations at the station as it happened outside.
