Man missing after ships in collision

ONE man is missing after a collision involving four ships on the Huangpu River yesterday.

Four people fell into the water but three were rescued, local maritime authorities said.

The accident happened about 9:45am near Fuxing Island in Yangpu District. The 10,000-ton Zimingsheng 16 veered off course and collided with three small barges which were at anchor.

Two of them, the Tongxiang 00105 and the Yuhang 147, capsized and sank, the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration said.

Two people on the Tongxiang fell into the water. One was rescued by a coast-guard boat from the Lanzhou Road Maritime Office.

The other man was still missing last night. The bureau sent five boats to search for him and they will continue to do so until this morning, officials said.

The man who was rescued, surnamed Zhang, was sent to the Yangpu District Central Hospital. His condition is stable despite suffering from hypothermia.

Two men who fell into the water from the Yuhang 147 were quickly rescued by passing boats.

When the collision took place, three other men on the Yuhang 147 jumped on to the Hangzhou 305 barge, which was damaged in the collision. They were uninjured.

The Zimingsheng 16 vessel is owned by the Wuzhou Shipping Heavy Industry Co Ltd in Lianyungang, Zhejiang Province.
