Man sentenced 4 years for setting mom’s home ablaze
A man was sentenced to four years in prison for arson after he set his mother’s home ablaze over a financial dispute, prosecutors in Yangpu District said today.
The 27-year-old man, surnamed Liu, had previously been given a four-month detention for drug trafficking in 2012.
Liu's brother wanted to go overseas and asked Liu for help last year. Liu borrowed 200,000 yuan (US$31,820) from a usurer and used his apartment as collateral, prosecutors said.
When the payment deadline approached, Liu met the usurer, surnamed Zhang, to discuss the details. Liu was shocked when Zhang told him that his house had been sold for 800,000 yuan. Zhang said he would take 620,000 yuan to cover the principal and interest and return the remaining 180,000 yuan to Liu. Zhang also asked Liu to move out as soon as possible.
After checking the housing records at a real estate trading center, Liu suspected his mother had sold it. She denied it. Prosecutors said they couldn’t explain how the house was sold without Liu’s permission.
On July 29, Liu went to his mother's home and they argued over Liu’s former home. After she left, Liu threw some items out the window, poured alcohol on the bed sheets and lit it on fire, according to prosecutors.
