Man sets fire to ex-dad-in-law's house, commits suicide

A man jumped to his death from the fourth floor of a building after setting fire to the home of his ex-father-in-law in Zhabei District last night.

The ex-father-in-law, in his 70s, was rescued by firefighters.

Around 9am the 45-year-old man, surnamed Chen, visited his ex-father-in-law on Wenxi Road to borrow money as he was reportedly in debt. But his request was refused and Chen was enraged, according to witnesses.

For revenge, he then threw gasoline into the apartment kitchen and set it alight. After seeing the kitchen on fire, Chen jumped off from the fourth floor. He died after reaching the hospital.

With the help of neighbors, the fire was put out in a few minutes, and the trapped man was rescued with minor bruises. The kitchen was badly damaged - the ceiling had collapsed and the walls blackened.

Police are still investigating the accident.
