Man stabs wife, father-in-law to death
A MAN is accused of killing his wife and father-in-law and stabbing four other relatives - including his pregnant sister-in-law and two-year-old nephew - in a family dispute on Sunday night in the suburban Minhang District.
Minhang police said the man, surnamed Li, was drinking with friends before going home and quarreling with his family members.
He stabbed them fatally with a kitchen knife and then attempted suicide.
Li, a migrant worker in his 30s, was detained by police after he was treated at a hospital while his wife and father-in-law died on the way to the hospital, police said yesterday.
The stabbing happened just before 9:20pm when police got the call about Li's attacks at a rental house in a residential area on Zhuanxing Road in Zhuanqiao Town.
"Li looks honest and often played mahjong with us. Who would've thought he would kill people," said Li's neighbor surnamed He.
"The couple always quarrels and we've been used to it."
Witnesses said Li, his wife and their daughter went to her parents' house after Li returned from drinking. The couple were fighting all the way to the parents' home. The parents took their daughter's side, angering Li, police said.
Li rushed into the kitchen for a knife and hacked at his wife and his father-in-law, killing both.
He also stabbed his mother-in-law, his brother-in-law, the brother-in-law's pregnant wife and even his two-year-old nephew.
The woman, nine months pregnant, escaped the house, covering her belly, and called for help. Her son, also stabbed, followed her, crying while running, according to neighbors who called the police and ambulance immediately.
The sister-in-law had surgery to deliver the baby early yesterday morning and was being treated at Minhang District Central Hospital.
The mother and the baby still need further observation at the hospital, officials said.
Her two-year-old boy was in stable condition after treatment, as was the mother-in-law.
Li tried to commit suicide by cutting himself after the crime but was stopped by police.
Li said he was cheated by his family but still wanted to see them, according to the STV news yesterday.
