Man surrenders after wife strangled

A LOCAL man handed himself in to police yesterday after he allegedly strangled his wife over property and separation disputes on Saturday.

The 48-year-old, surnamed Shen, is said to have hidden the body for two days in their home before he was persuaded by his brother to give himself up to police early yesterday.

Shen is alleged to have admitted he killed his wife, a 38-year-old Chongming Island resident surnamed Song, during a quarrel at about 2pm on Saturday.

The couple had argued frequently, and police and neighborhood committee workers who had tried to mediate said they were mainly fighting over how they should split compensation money received in relation to Song's house on the island.

It is also claimed Song would not consent to a divorce, according to police who intervened in the past.

The husband allegedly told police that he grabbed a coat from a chair on impulse during their argument on Saturday and strangled his wife until she was dead.

He is said to have then brought home a suitcase in which to hide the body.

Because it was too heavy to move, he called his younger brother for help.

But Shen's brother persuaded him to give himself up.

Police said that they have put Shen under arrest.
