Man tells police he killed his mother

A MAN told police that he killed his mother and set fire to their house on Tuesday, after giving himself up yesterday morning.

The suspect, surnamed Lin, walked into a police station near his home in Xuhui District at around 10am.

Lin told officers that he stabbed his mother to death after a quarrel on Tuesday afternoon, before starting a fire and fleeing the scene. Lin said he was "in a rage then."

Neighbors said they had heard an argument in the third-floor apartment before the fire broke out.

According to neighbors, Lin is aged 27 and unemployed.

Neighbors said the mother and son had often quarreled about his lack of a job and that he was living at home and using his parents' money.

The body of the woman, surnamed Zhao, 56, was found after the blaze was extinguished.

Lin's father was not at home at the time.

Meanwhile, the body of a 19-year-old man was found in a watercourse in Pudong New Area yesterday, two days after he left home following a dispute with his mother.

Police are investigating.
