Man tricks drivers to steal cars

A man who admitted he twice tricked drivers into getting out of their cars and then stole both vehicles has been arrested and charged with forcible seizure, Pudong New Area prosecutors said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Ou, pretended to want to buy a Mini Cooper second-hand and met the owner for a trial run in the Pudong New Area last December 2.

Prosecutors said Ou claimed the car's exhaust pipes did not work well and asked the owner to go check if the pipes were making abnormal noises.

But when the owner went behind the car, Ou gunned the engine and drove quickly from the scene.

Ou said he gifted the stolen Mini Cooper, worth nearly 230,000 yuan (US$36,426), to his girlfriend.

The suspect also confessed to using the same means to snatch a Hyundai car worth nearly 90,000 yuan from an unlicensed cabbie last October 30.

The suspect claimed the exhaust pipes of the car were leaking water that would rust the car.

He got the cabbie to check the status of exhaust pipes and drove the Hyundai away, prosecutors said.
