Man uses girlfriend to trap dater for ransom

A man who asked his girlfriend to seduce and extort money from a man she met on the Internet was sentenced to three years and three months in prison, a court in the city's Chongming County said today.

Prosecutors said the convict surnamed Shi plotted the trap with his girlfriend surnamed Yang after she told him that she was going to meet a chat room friend in May.

Shi found it a good opportunity to make money and asked Yang extort money from the victim surnamed Feng by threatening to call the police for attempted rape.

On May 4, Feng arrived in Chongming and Yang took him to a hotel room for a rest. While Feng was taking a shower, Yang sent the room number to Shi in text message and waited for "rescue".

Shi broke into the room with three friends while Feng was wearing shorts and chatting with Yang in bed. They beat Feng, put him in a car and drove him to a pier by the Yangtze River, threatening to throw him into the river.

Feng gave them 1,300 yuan (US$206) and escaped by a taxi when Shi and his friends were not watching. Shi was caught soon after Feng reported to the police.
