Man walks again after novel medical treatment

A local man who was partially paralyzed after falling off a roof five years ago can now walk unaided thanks to a new medical treatment involving the electrical stimulation of the spinal column.

The 24-year-old man surnamed Chen became the country’s first recipient of the novel technique in January while a patient at Shanghai Tongren Hospital, doctors said yesterday.

Following his accident, Chen lost most of the feeling in his legs and was able to walk only a few steps with the aid of a stick. He also suffered the side effects of erectile dysfunction and urinary tract infections.

After studying his case, doctors decided Chen might benefit from a new technique that uses electrodes to stimulate the spinal cord and effectively reopen the pathways along which information flows between the legs and the brain.

The results were impressive. After the stimulation, Chen regained sensation in his legs and with the help of physiotherapists was soon back on his feet.

He can now walk for up to 1 kilometer unaided and his related problems have also eased, doctors said.

Dr Sun Chengyan from Tongren Hospital said that while the treatment is not suitable for everyone with a spinal injury, it has been shown to help patients with partial paralysis to regain their movement functions.
