Man won't remove contacts, risks eyes
A LOCAL man may go blind after wearing eye contacts for 10 years without taking them out once simply because, he told doctors, he found it too troublesome to do so.
The man's contacts have fused with his cornea, which caused him to start to have blurry vision.
Doctors from the Shanghai Eye Disease Prevention and Treatment Center said it is the first time they have seen a case of continual wearing of contacts for such a long time, according to yesterday's Shanghai Evening Post.
The man, in his 40s, needs surgery to remove the contacts, but he could become blind if the cornea breaks during the surgery, doctors said.
"If he doesn't undergo the surgery to remove the eye contacts, the man also could become blind if his eye problem deteriorates," said the center's Doctor Zhu Jianfeng.
Doctors said wearing contacts overnight or wearing contacts while sleeping or swimming are all risky for eye health. Even though some lenses are designed for extended wear, doctors said such habits can lead to eye infections.
"We suggest that people not wear eye contacts for over 10 hours and remove contacts while sleeping," Zhu said.
He also warned women of the risk of using mascara or fake eyelashes while wearing contacts and improper use of eyedrops with contacts.
Zhu recommends people who feel it is troublesome to remove contacts should stick with glasses.
