Man's heroism saves neighbor

A 68-YEAR-OLD man risked his life to rescue an elderly female neighbor from a fire in the Pudong New Area yesterday afternoon.

The fire broke out in a residential complex on Pudong Avenue about 1pm and damaged two apartments.

The blaze started on the balcony of an apartment on the fourth floor and soon spread to the upstairs balcony.

The fourth-floor tenant was away from home, while the woman living in the fifth-floor apartment was too scared to move and was dragged out of the apartment by her neighbor surnamed Zhao.

"She was paralyzed by the sudden fire," Zhao said. "I was unable to carry her on my back."

So Zhao told his wife and some other neighbors to help him move her downstairs.

Residents on the sixth floor called the police and the fire brigade reached the site in 10 minutes. No one was injured in the fires.

It is the city's third story of heroes who saved seniors or young children from blazes in the past month.

A young man, wearing a wet towel over his face, crawled into a burning apartment and rescued a five-year-old who was left locked in on January 27.

In another incident on the same day, an 81-year-old woman trapped in a burning room was saved by a neighbor.
