Maradona fronts for online game

DIEGO Maradona is the coach of Argentina in the World Cup and now the soccer legend has an added description: ambassador of a Chinese online game in a contract from Zhu Jun, Shanghai's soccer tycoon.

The Argentina super soccer star has agreed to endorse The9 Ltd's new online game, "Winning Goal," just a week before opening of the 2010 World Cup, the Shanghai-based online game firm said yesterday.

Through an "undisclosed and considerable" promotion fee, Maradona will help the The9 promote the competitive soccer game in both Web and social-network-services versions. One promotional possibility: sending World Cup balls with Maradona's signature to Chinese game players, according to The9.

Zhu, head of the Shanghai Shenhua Football Club and chairman and founder of The9, helped to make the agreement with Maradona.

Maradona was said to ink a secret pact with Zhu to become Liverpool Club's next coach if the Chinese multi-millionaire successfully purchases the Reds in a deal valued about US$1.2 billion, media reported earlier.

But nothing solid has come of those reports.
