Mariinsky Theater to present opera, symphony, ballet in Shanghai

Valeny Gergiev will lead about 400 artists of Mariinsky Theater to give seven performances in three sets since tonight at Shanghai Grand Theater.

Opera, symphony and ballet will take turns to be presented, involving the works of three great Russian composers Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and Shostakovich, which composes the first Mariinsky Arts Festival at Shanghai Grant Theater. It is also part of the 18th Shanghai International Arts Festival.

It has been 17 years since Mariinsky Theater visited Shanghai with its whole capacity of orchestra, ballet, and opera house. The artists will present Opera Tchaikovsky’s “The Queen of Spades” based on Pushkin’s novel on October 18 and 20, Concert by Mariinsky Orchestra on October 19 and 21, and Ballet “Romeo and Juliet on October 24-25. A public-welfare concert “Peter and the Wolf” tailored for local families with children will be staged on the afternoon of October 21.

Valeny Gergiev will conduct the orchestra throughout the seven performances. It will be the fourth time for the Russian conductor to visit the city since his first step here in 1998.

“I still remember my arrival in Shanghai with my luggage missing in the flight as an episode. I was terribly worried, but the concert turned out successful,” says Gergiev, “I got all my luggage here this time, so that we are all ready to present the best performance for Shanghai audiences.”

With a new theater of Mariinsky set in Vladivostok this January, Gergiev hoped that the Theater can develop more collaboration with artists in Shanghai, as they are now more close to China geographically.

“There is an annual music festival at the new theater from July to August, and we hope that we can get artists all over the world including the rising ones in China to participate,” says Gergiev. He expects more audiences of different background can benefit from the cultural collaboration.
