Maritime center plans more rescue stations
The Shanghai Maritime Rescue Center plans to set up more rescue stations near major ports and channels around the city.
“Our goal is to assure a rescue team arrives at any spot on the Huangpu River within 15 minutes of an emergency call,” said Chen Xiaoguang, deputy director of the Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration. “The rescue team should be able to reach any area of Shanghai’s section of the Yangtze River within 45 minutes, and any area of Chinese territorial sea within our jurisdiction in no more than 90 minutes.”
Special shorelines will also be arranged for rescue ships near Hengsha Island at the mouth of the Yangtze River, water areas near Pudong’s Nanhui and Jinshan areas, though no specific timeline was given for the plans.
Chen said the center will further strengthen its rescue ability by setting up an anti-chemical pollution team this year. The team will tackle leakage accidents.
“More than 10,000 boats carrying chemicals sail past the channels at the south of Shanghai’s Qingcaosha Reservoir every year,’ Chen said. “An anti-chemical pollution rescue team is essential.”
