Market sells fake eggs
A PUDONG resident surnamed Yang bought 1 kilogram of eggs from a food market near Donglu Road and Jingao Road, only to find they weren't real eggs at all, Labor Daily reported yesterday.
The artificial eggs were made of some unidentified, but barely edible substance. He and his family tried to eat three or four before they realized something was wrong.
Yang steamed two eggs on the night he bought them, but found the egg white and yolk wouldn't mix together.
He boiled two more the next morning, but his son couldn't eat them. Yang found the yolks were hard, like a rubber ball, and he could bounce them off the floor, the report said.
The fake eggs also smelt different and had a thick layer of film around them.
Yang reported the incident to Shanghai's food inspection authority, Labor Daily reported.
Fake eggs are harmful to the brain and may cause memory loss or even dementia, the newspaper quoted experts as saying.
A worker can make 300 fake eggs an hour, and each kilogram sells for 1.2 yuan (18 US cents).
