Masked robber nabbed soon after looting a hotel

A masked man robbed the cashier of a budget hotel in downtown Shanghai at 2:45am today, using a fire extinguisher as his weapon, and he was caught by police within an hour.

Witnesses said the man broke into the lobby of the hotel on Wuyi Road and threatened the front desk receptionists with the fire extinguisher. He asked them to open the cash box and made off with more than 10,000 yuan.

He was seen climbing over a defense wall to flee, the witnesses said.

Police were alerted instantly and took positions at nearby crossroads. They caught the suspect around 3:20am near the corner of Jiangsu Road and Lixi Road.

Police said they found 13,230 yuan of cash in the man's plastic bag. The amount matched the hotel's reported loss.
