Massive road construction delays traffic

LOCAL traffic was hampered last month by construction works on about 1,000 roads around Shanghai, according to a monthly report published yesterday by traffic police.

Seventy-one people died and 238 were injured in traffic accidents in April, compared with 66 deaths and 220 injuries in March, the report said.

Altogether 2,846 automobiles broke down on local roads, or 95 cases everyday, a jump of 13.75 percent from a month before, it said.

In April, traffic was slower on roads in the north-south direction than in the east-west direction. Traffic was reported slower in the evenings than in the morning.

The report blamed the slow traffic on massive construction works.

The A8, or Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway, which is being closed for expansion, caused traffic chaos in the Xinzhuang area and construction on Luoshan Road section of Longyang Road resulted in frequent traffic jams in nearby Pudong areas.

Faster traffic was reported in commercial and tourism areas such as Shanghai Railway Station, Zhongshan Park, the Bund, Xujiahui, People's Square and Yuyuan Garden, the report said.

Improved traffic was also reported on local elevated roads.

Traffic moved at an average speed of 35.64 kilometers per hour in the evening and at 33.79 kilometers per hour in the morning, compared with 26.72 and 25.61 respectively per hour in March.
