Master’s graduate turns thief
A MAN surnamed Qu, who has a master’s degree, was sentenced to four months in jail, with a four-month reprieve, after stealing five delivery packages in four days, the Pudong New Area court said yesterday.
Due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, many communities arranged for parcels to be left outside their residential complex for residents to collect to prevent cross-infection.
Qu said that when he picked up his parcel at the depository outside his residential area in Pudong on March 6, he saw the two packages marked “yogurt,” which he stole and consumed.
After that, he went there with the intention of stealing, he said. The packages he took contained cleanser, disinfectant, T-shirts and dresses, worth over 600 yuan (US$86), the court said.
Qu was arrested on March 18 and admitted what he did. Some packages had been returned to their owners, the court said.
