Matchmakers go for men
SHANGHAI matrimonial agencies will for the first time recruit 100 college graduates, including men, as matchmakers, the go-between industry regulator said yesterday.
The recruitment, at the end of the year, will introduce young talent into the business instead of the middle-aged women that usually dominate the matchmaking industry, said Jiang Mingde, the secretary-general of the Matrimonial Institution Management Association.
The recruitment of college graduate matchmakers, especially young male matchmakers, would also cater for the needs of a rising number of young white collar workers, who, Jiang Mingde said, psychologically prefer male.
These so-called "red gentlemen" - "red ladies" are how middle-aged female matchmakers are traditionally described in Chinese - have a higher success ratio but currently comprise less than 10 percent of matchmakers, according to Jiang.
The association will offer candidates professional training after recruitment.
