Matchmaking TV show conman duped 4 women
A CONMAN who swindled more than 350,000 yuan (US$53,864) from young women he met through matchmaking TV programs was yesterday jailed for eight years.
Feng Zhenyu, 53 - who claimed he was 35 and owned a property company - met four women through TV shows and persuaded them to give him cash, the Xuhui District People's Court heard.
Feng was also fined 30,000 yuan.
His fraud was not exposed until one of his victims discovered that he was married and called in police.
That victim, a white-collar worker whose name was not revealed, met Feng, who called himself Jin Biao, through a matchmaking TV show in September 2009 and began a relationship with him.
After dating for just 10 days, Feng told her he was temporarily strapped for cash after paying out 17 million yuan compensation as developer of an apartment building that collapsed while under construction.
The woman, in her 20s, believed Feng's tale and gave him her bank card.
In the following months, Feng swindled 280,000 yuan from the woman.
On October 5, 2010, the woman learned Feng had been injured in a car accident. Rushing to hospital, she discovered two women were already taking care of him.
She learned his real name from a police report, which aroused her suspicions.
Police said Feng had been jailed three times for rape, abduction and human trafficking, theft and escaping from jail. Feng was released three years ago.
The court said Feng, a father of one, swindled 5,000 yuan from another woman on the pretence of applying for permanent residence for her.
Two other victims were each cheated out of 7,000 yuan, the court heard.
