Matchmaking party set to attract 20,000 singles this weekend

MORE than 20,000 Shanghai singles, 55 percent of them women, will participate in the city's largest matchmaking party this year, its organizers said.
This year's event will be held in the Expo Park this weekend. Application closed yesterday but the organizers are still trying to lure more male participants, said Zhou Juemin, director of the Shanghai Matchmakers Association, one of the organizers.
"Although the application period has ended, we are still asking companies with a large number of male workers to encourage their male singles to attend," Zhou said, naming Baosteel Group and high-tech companies in Pudong's Zhangjiang area.
In addition, about 8,000 parents or friends will accompany the participants to the party. Each will be charged 50 yuan (US$8) as the organizers hope to limit the number of parents.
About 30 percent are parents who are representing their children to look for an ideal date because their children cannot come. Singles can participate free of charge.
