Mercury shoots up to 35 degrees but heatwave only to be temporary as shower is imminent

THE Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued this year's first yellow alert for a heat wave at 10:20am today when the mercury in thermometers is soaring.

The temperature is expected to hit 35 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.

According to the weather bureau, most districts this morning recorded their temperatures to be between 29 and 30 degrees at 8am. Currently, the mercury is still shooting up and is forecasted to stop at around 34 to 35 degrees.

Residents were warned to reduce their outdoor activities in the afternoon while people working outside were asked to take some measures to prevent the risky potential health threats the heatwave might bring.

The summer heat wave's lashing of the city will also act as the cause of a light smog forming this morning.

However, the hot and dry weather will come to an end later today when a south-moving plum rain belt will intercept and shower the city. Some parts of areas are expected to have heavy rainfalls and possible strong gales.

The rain is likely to cool the city and press down the mercury back to the high twenties at the weekends. The damp weather will then continue into the start of next week.
