Metro extension on the fast track
DRILLING started yesterday at a construction base in Xujiahui for Metro Line 11's northern extension to Pudong, marking the project's second phase.
Construction is expected to be completed in 2012, today's Oriental Morning Post reported.
The second phase extends 21 kilometers underground, starting from Huashan Road in Xuhui District and stopping along 13 stations through Changning, Xuhui and Pudong with a terminal at Luoshan Road in Pudong.
The first phase of Line 11's northern section, running from Jiading District in the northwest to Pudong in the southeast, will begin operation later this year. The 46-kilometer trip will take 35 minutes.
A southern branch of Line 11 will open in 2012 covering 59km of track and spanning 11 stations. It will cut journey times from Longyang Road to Lingang New City to 30 minutes, and link with five other Metro lines across Shanghai.
