Metro keeps festival on track
A PINK train will start running on Metro Line 2 today to help mark the city's celebrations of International Women's Day.
But male passengers shouldn't hesitate to board because they are equally welcome, said Metro management.
The specially decorated train - dubbed the "Pink Shuttle" - is a gift from the city Metro operator to the festival. The train will carry non-profit advertisements highlighting female health issues and help for women in need.
International Women's Day celebrates the economic, political and social achievements of women.
Passengers will find the special train in service on Line 2 for a week starting from today, said Metro officials.
"Male passengers needn't be shy to board the Pink Shuttle as everyone is welcome for the celebrations," Zhang Shuo, a Metro company official, said yesterday.
The eight-carriage pink train will feature pink daisies and the pink theme continues with special decoration inside the carriages.
"Staff worked overnight at the weekend to cover the train in pink and floral stickers. They will be removed a week later," Zhang explained.
The Metro operator had earlier announced the imminent arrival of the Pink Shuttle online, and received a warm response. "I am eager to see the pink train on Women's Day," said a follower of the Metro company's microblog on t.sina.com.cn.
Platforms on several major Metro stations will also be decorated in pink.
Meanwhile, the city's Oriental Pearl Television Tower in Pudong will be bathed in a "crystal pink" light for four hours starting at 7:30pm.
This will be the first time the city has organized a public lighting ceremony to celebrate Women's Day, said the local tourism authority.
The color was specially designed for the occasion and technicians completed fine tuning yesterday for tonight's show, management said.
