Metro line extensions ease commuter traffic at popular transfer stops

SOME of the newly opened Metro line extensions have eased passenger traffic at major intersections and even some lines, Metro operator Shanghai Shentong Group said today.

The new sections on Metro lines 11, 12 and 13 went into service late last month, providing more options for commuters. Line 12’s Hanzhong Road Station and Qufu Road Station now connect to Line 1 and 8, respectively, enabling riders to skip the People’s Square Station — Shanghai’s busiest stop.

Over the past two weeks, the average passenger number at People’s Square Station has dropped almost 15 percent from the previous 700,000 people per day, Shentong said.

The passenger number in other stations like Jinshajiang Road, Shanghai Railway Station, Nanjing Road E., Jing’an Temple and Yishan Road all saw a significant drop of between 15 to 25 percent.

Line 12’s Hanzhong Road Station, which also links to Line 1 and 13, has now become a popular transfer station for many riders. On an average, there are 126,000 passengers transferring at the station everyday, the operator said.

Line 12’s newly opened Shaanxi Road S., Nanjing Road W., Jiashan Road stations, as well as Line 13’s Xintiandi and Jiangning Road stations have also proved popular among commuters.
