Metro police ramps up security as holiday nears

SHANGHAI Metro Police will step up security check during the Spring Festival season. More passengers will be asked to put their bags through X-ray scanners in subway stations and random checks will be more frequent.

Armed policemen and police dogs will be seen patrolling major stations, police said in a press conference today.

Metro police have seized a large amount of forbidden items in the city's nearly 300 Metro stations, such as fireworks as the holiday approaches. Five passengers were fined for carrying firecrackers into the subway.

A 15-year-old student was detained on December 22 for lighting up an inflammable type of glue inside a train on Metro Line 8, police said.

Officers also warned passengers against pickpockets on crowded trains and in busy stations. During a crackdown that began last month, the police nabbed 183 thieves and recovered stolen items worth more than 70,000 yuan.

Beggars and vendors will be taken away from trains as soon as they are spotted, the police added.
