Midweek showers might delay arrival of summer
The city is likely to welcome summer's coming this week if the five workdays' average temperature are above 22 degrees Celsius, forecasters said.
However, Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer at the bureau, said the upcoming showers starting midweek could have a chance to cause some unexpected mercury fluctuation.
Due to a high pressure, skies are forecast to remain bright and dry Tuesday with a high of 27 degrees Celsius and a low of 18 degrees. But the sunshine will give way to the southwesterly moisture, which will bring some showers from Wednesday, and the dark and rainy condition is set to continue into the weekend.
The high will dip to 25 degrees when the wet shift begins Wednesday with the low to be 19 degrees. Thursday and Friday will both see a high of 26 degrees and a low of 20 degrees.
This year's summer will come later than the past decade's average time and possibly later than the past three decades' average if its arrival couldn't be declared this week.
Data show that in the past decade Shanghai generally enters summer on May 21, and for past three decades it was May 29.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Flood Control Headquarters said the plum rain season of this year will start later than the average of the past three decades as well.
It also warned about a possible increase of rain in flood season this year. The city often had its plum rain season start in mid June.
