Migrants use phones for job data

SMART phones have become a major tool for China's younger generation of migrant workers to look for jobs in big Chinese cities, according to a survey.

The workers' busy work environment and limited access to computers on a daily basis are the main reasons for the young migrant workers to resort to mobile phones to go online for the latest job market information, said the survey released by Daguu.com, a Shanghai-based human resources website targeting laborers, represented by the group of nearly 400 million migrant workers nationwide.

More than 22,300 migrant workers of both genders and with an average age of 26 participated in the survey.

About 70 percent of the workers said smart phone Internet service is the main platform they use to acquire information, including job data. Only 6 percent said they rely on computers to get daily information.

In Shanghai, about 66 percent of the respondents said mobile-phone Internet service is their major information provider.
