Milk customers upset by thefts
A man who runs a milk store in downtown's Jing'an District came up with a unique way to make up for his loss after he purchased a wrong batch of products: He stole more than 50 bottles of milk from residential delivery subscribers, police said yesterday.
The vendor surnamed Bao, 60, was detained this week by Huangpu District police. Bao said he became desperate and admitted he crossed the line. He confessed to the thefts on Wednesday and is facing days of detention, police said.
Bao was identified by surveillance cameras in the area around Shaanxi Road S. and Huaihai Road M. in Huangpu, police said. Milk subscribers complained that they had lost more than 1,000 bottles in total in recent months and blamed it on poorly made milk boxes, as the box locks seemed not to be functional.
"With my key, I can open different milk bottles of my neighbors," a victim surnamed Ke told reporters yesterday.
The district police yesterday did not confirm the amount of stolen milk mentioned by residents but said they did not rule out other suspects. Milk has been found missing since early this month in the households along downtown Huaihai Road M., which upset a lot of residents, especially seniors used to getting up early and getting their milk early in the morning.
"Our milk was supported by the government and was never stolen during the year," said a resident surnamed Chai. "The milk was delivered by a milk company but it was gone yesterday morning."
The situation was also repeated along Chai's lane at 668 Huaihai Road M.
Almost every household reported stolen milk.
