Minimally invasive treatment gives cancer patients more options
Cancer patients now have more options due to the development of minimally invasive interventional treatment. Patients with liver or kidney cancer can receive comprehensive treatment like regional ablation therapy to kill cancerous cells without harming healthy cells and tissue.
Traditional surgery requires cutting into the body, resulting in damage, scars and a lengthy recovery process. Patients usually can’t survive a second surgery due to the damage. Meanwhile, chemotherapy also has a negative effect on healthy cells and tissue, medical experts said.
“The future of cancer treatment must be comprehensive and individualized with a large involvement of minimally invasive treatment,” said Dr Zhai Bo from Renji Hospital at the 10th Chinese Conference on Minimally Invasive Therapy in Oncology in Shanghai.
Interventional treatment includes radiofrequency ablation therapy, lasers, frozen therapy and irreversible electroporation.
“Irreversible electroporation has been approved by the US FDA and is undergoing animal trials in China,” he said. “The therapy means needle-like electrodes are inserted into the cancer and create heat that results in cell destruction. Such therapy does not damage the surrounding healthy cells and tissue.”
