Mom gets jail for setting fire
A young mother who set a fire to burn down the rented apartment where she and her boyfriend lived was sentenced to prison for two years and six months, the Qingpu District People's Court said yesterday.
Zhao Xiaolei, a 24-year-old Henan Province native, came to Shanghai with her boyfriend in 2008 and worked here. They gave birth to a daughter in 2009, but they did not register for marriage. On May 18, Zhao and her boyfriend surnamed Tian had a furious argument, and Zhao became even angrier when Tian stopped her from leaving the home with their daughter. When Tian went out to shop, the mother poured cooking oil all over the bed and sofa and then ignited the bed sheet. Though Zhao's behavior did not threaten public security, the court ruled that she set the fire on purpose and should be punished.
