Mooncake prices expected to rise
Mooncake prices will increase slightly this year due to the rising costs of ingredients and higher salaries.
Mooncakes with meat fillings will cost about 4 yuan each this year, up from 3.5 yuan last year due to higher pork prices, the Shanghai Confectionery Industry Association said today.
A popular vegetarian mooncake from the city’s Jade Buddha Temple costs 88 yuan per box, up from last year’s 82 yuan. The temple has a 30-year tradition of selling mooncakes for the Mid-autumn Festival. The temple’s abbot blesses the mooncakes and people believe they will bring good luck.
“Labor costs in the food industry have increased to 3,000 yuan per month, a rise from about 2,200 yuan last year,” an official with the association said.
The association also said it expected sales to increase about 10 percent this year. The city’s mooncake makers are expected to produce 27,000 tons of the popular treat with sales reaching 2.5 billion yuan this year, according to the association.
The Mid-Autumn Festival is on September 27 this year.
