Mother arrested over abused girl

A MOTHER whose four-year-old daughter died after months of ill-treatment and beatings was arrested yesterday.

Minhang District prosecutors have charged Zhang Yi, 27, a Jiangsu Province native, with abuse.

On January 8, a man carrying a girl wrapped in a quilt arrived at the emergency room of Shanghai No. 5 People's Hospital, asking doctors to save her.

But the girl was already dead and police were called after the doctor and a nurse noticed cuts and bruises all over her body.

Zhang, who is alleged to have beaten the girl with a broomstick and other tools, told prosecutors that the girl wouldn't call her mom or her husband dad. The girl was too naughty and wouldn't study, Zhang said.

She told prosecutors she married Yu Jun in 2006 after her daughter was born. The girl had been raised by her grandparents in Sichuan Province until last July, when she and her husband took her to live with them in Shanghai.

"I told my husband that our daughter must have been spoiled and we had to take severe means to discipline her," Zhang is said to have told prosecutors.

Zhang often beat her daughter severely, prosecutors said, once even breaking a metal broomstick while beating her.

Yu also allegedly beat the girl. But just with his hands and he didn't beat the girl as often as Zhang, prosecutors said.

The abuse estranged the girl from her mother.

On January 7, the girl refused to have lunch or study and Zhang is said to have beaten her again with a broomstick.

Early the next day, Yu found her breathing hard and took her to hospital.

Neighbors told prosecutors that the child was a lovely girl but often suffered abuse.

"The couple, especially the wife, scolded the girl almost every day and beat her," said a neighbor surnamed Li. "Sometimes they made her stand in the rain as a punishment."
