Motorcyclist dies in river crash

A MOTORCYCLIST was killed yesterday after he drove into a river and smashed his head on a cargo truck that had fallen into the river only minutes earlier in Minhang District.

Both vehicles crashed because a bridge had collapsed when the suspected overloaded truck passed over it.

According to nearby residents, the accident occurred about 4:30am on Zhaolou Road in Minhang when a cement bridge collapsed as a cargo truck loaded with asphalt crossed over it.

The truck fell into the river but the driver safely escaped the vehicle.

However, instead of reporting the accident to police, the driver fled the scene.

About 15 minutes later, a man on a motorcycle fell into the river as it was dark, he was driving fast and he couldn't see that the bridge had collapsed. He died at the scene after hitting the truck.

A witness said he found the body of the motorcyclist several hours after the accident.

"The cement bridge had been used for many years but no one had attended to it for repairs or maintenance," the witness said.

An official with Minhang's Pujiang Town government surnamed Zhang said the motorcyclist was a 50-year-old villager from Hangtou Town, Pudong New Area.

Zhang said the bridge was built by the Hangtou government about 30 years ago. It links Hangtou's Pailou Village to Pujiang's Shengli Village.

Zhang confirmed that little maintenance work was done on the bridge over the years.

Minhang police said they have caught and held the truck driver, adding they are still investigating the case.
