Municipal think tank in annual session

RESTRUCTURING and innovation will be the key words to guide Shanghai's economic growth this year, and the city needs to boost its cultural industry, senior officials of Shanghai's top political advisory body said today.
More than 770 members of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference assembled for a seven-day session that opened this morning at the Expo Center to make proposals to the city government.
The Shanghai Municipal People's Congress, the city's top legislative body, will also open its annual session tomorrow.
"Shanghai's growth should become less dependent on fixed asset investment, real estate market, heavy industry and exports," said Qian Jinglin, vice chairman of the Shanghai Committee of the CPPCC. "The city should channel more capital into the real economy and rely more on innovation to drive economic growth."
Being the second year of the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), this year is crucial for accomplishing primary targets set in the plan and a notable improvement in people's livelihood, Qian said.
