Murder suspect caught after 6 years
CITY police said yesterday that they have caught a man they had been pursuing for six years for allegedly raping and killing a woman in Baoshan District.
The suspect, Gou Zhengtuan, changed his name and worked in different places around the country while on the run, said police.
Officers said they were on his trail in many provinces, distributing more than 10,000 wanted posters.
"I knew this day would come," Gou allegedly told police who found him.
Police are still hunting another fugitive they believe is involved in the same case.
The manhunt began after a young woman, surnamed Zhang, was found stabbed to death in a field in Baoshan in October 2005.
The 27-year-old victim, who worked at a local restaurant, was raped and her belongings stolen, police said.
Police narrowed down suspects to Gou, who had been released from prison in early 2005 after a nine-year sentence for robbery.
Gou had fled his home in Sichuan Province, officers discovered, but for the next six years police went there repeatedly as clues emerged.
In May, police were tipped-off that Gou had gone to northwest China's Gansu Province and was working on an expressway project.
He was found at his workplace.
"I knew I chose the wrong road," Gou is said to have told police. "But it's too late."
Baoshan police said they have apprehended 84 fugitives in the past month.
