Museum holds seminar on Qian Xuesen

NEARLY 20,000 people have visited the Qian Xuesen Library and Museum since it was opened to the public in December, officials said today.

Half of the visitors were students and some came from overseas, according to the museum officials at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which is Qian's alma mater.

The museum held a seminar today to commemorate Qian Xuesen, also spelled Hsue-shen Tsien. The veteran scientist was the father of China's missile and space programs and played the lead role in the launch of China's first Earth-orbiting satellite in 1970. He died in October 2009 at the age of 97.

The Qian Xuesen Library and Museum was inaugurated on December 11, 2011 to mark the 100th anniversary of his birth.
