Mystery of the body parts found in creek
SHANGHAI police are investigating a possible murder case as two body parts were found in a creek over two days in different districts, officers confirmed yesterday.
Police from Putuo and Jiading districts said DNA tests will be carried out to see if the body parts belong to the same person. At this point, officers said they believe the parts belonged to the same woman.
Part of a human torso was found in Xinchapu Creek in Jiading on Saturday and a left leg was found in the same creek in Putuo the next day.
Police are searching for the other body parts. The cause of death was unclear.
"We found cuts on the torso that look like they could be from a boat's propeller, but we still don't know whether it was a murder or an accident," said a Jiading officer surnamed Chen.
The case first became public when a woman surnamed Ge witnessed police salvaging a body part from Xinchapu Creek near the Outer Ring Road in Taopu area of Putuo about 3pm on Sunday. She later posted it on the Internet. The post attracted widespread attention after it was also posted on weibo.com and kaixin001.com, two popular social networking websites.
"It's a whole leg with thigh, shin and foot," Ge told Shanghai Daily yesterday. "It was horrible and there were many cops and medical officers at the scene."
Putuo police yesterday confirmed they had recovered a human leg from the creek before adding that they were still collecting information.
Meanwhile, Jiading police confirmed part of a torso had been found on Saturday in the same creek in the district's Jiangqiao area.
