New ATMs reject cloning devices

SOME bank outlets in Shanghai have installed new automatic teller machines with specially designed card slots to prevent the use of bankcard cloning devices.

The new device lights up as green and vibrates when a card is inserted.

The vibration function is designed to prevent bankcard cloning devices from copying data stored on the card's magnetic strip.

The slot also disables usage of cloning devices because the card can't be inserted in the slot if such a device is also being used.

The Shanghai branch of China Construction Bank plans to gradually replace its ATMs with the updated models. Guangdong Development Bank purchased more than 1,100 of the new ATMs in 2007.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and Bank of China have also expressed interest in installing the specially–designed card slot on their ATMs.

The number of automatic teller machines in Shanghai will grow by 50 percent from 2007 to 2010 and the number of bankcard merchants is also expected to rise 55 percent, said the financial services office of Shanghai.
