New blood for Shanghai Disney Resort

SHANGHAI Disney Resort today launched an education program at 10 universities in Shanghai and neighboring provinces to train and attract students to join the resort after graduation.
The resort signed an agreement with the Shanghai Polytechnic University today as one of the first batch of cooperative universities. Others include Shanghai Sanda University, Shanghai Jianqiao University, Zhengzhou Tourism College in central Henan Province and Tourism College of Zhejiang.
The resort will open the Shanghai Disney Resort Talent Class at these universities with about 50 students at each class. They will receive tourism educations and learn Disney’s best practices through their college educations, said Lara Tiam, vice president of human resources for the resort. Disney cast members, which is Disney’s term for employees, will give lessons to the students and faculties at the universities.
Internship bases will also be set up with the partner schools to send some students to work as interns at the Disneylands around world, said Tiam. The Shanghai resort has sent 1,200 Chinese students to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida for internship since 2014.
“The resort has already generated thousands of direct and indirect jobs for tourism and cultural industry professionals, and this trend will continue as the resort continues to grow and expand," said Philippe Gas, general manager of the resort.
Construction has started on a Toy Story Land at Shanghai Disneyland to open in 2018. The resort will also open two new retail stores at Hongqiao International Airport in the spring of 2017, which will generate more jobs for local tourism talent, according to the resort.
The resort has already hired over 10,000 cast members from Shanghai and across China.
