New market watchdog in Pudong consolidates 3 agencies

A NEW market and quality watchdog in the Pudong New Area has been created from the consolidation of three separate bureaus, the latest move by the government to cut bureaucracy and improve administrative efficiency.

The Market Supervision Bureau of the Pudong New Area, to be officially launched tomorrow, will oversee the production, circulation and consumption of products, integrating the roles of the Pudong Industrial and Commercial Administrative Bureau, the Pudong Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau and the Pudong Food and Drug Administration.

The consolidation aims to create an integrated market oversight system while reducing the overlap of functions, a move in line with the central government’s bid to seek transformation of governmental function and let the market play a bigger role in the economy, authorities said.

The new body will offer one-stop service for starting up a new company to simplify the administrative approval process, which until now has required separate approvals from the three bureaus.

The consolidation reduces the number of departments to 17 from the previous 29. The number of civil servants was cut by 25 percent to 198.
