New road set to link northern districts
A NEW roadway system that would include tunnels running alongside and under the Suzhou Creek to connect six downtown districts will be built to help relieve gridlock, the Shanghai Construction Commission said yesterday.
Construction is expected to start in less than three years and planners are currently fine-tuning the blueprint to decide on the best route.
Four downtown districts on the northern bank of Suzhou Creek, namely Yangpu, Hongkou, Zhabei and Putuo, as well as the downtown Jing'an and Changning districts, will be connected by the planned "Northern Downtown Passage."
The project is meant to improve conditions for commuters from the northern bank of the Suzhou Creek into downtown areas. The city's elevated ring road systems have greatly improved urban traffic conditions and the future northern passage system is expected to play a similar role, commission officials said yesterday.
Officials told Shanghai Daily that the passage is expected to include some tunnels as well as some ground-level arteries to provide convenient road connections.
Construction also is scheduled to start on the Zhenguang Road Bridge before end of this year, officials said yesterday. The vehicle span will also run across Suzhou Creek to benefit residents in Putuo District.
The projects are among a package of new plans to improve public services on the northern side of Suzhou Creek.
The construction watchdog said yesterday that residents from the northern districts soon will be able to use two new Metro lines.
Part of Line 13 will open to traffic before the end of this year and the same will take place with Line 12 next year. Other improvements will help residents from some parts of the northeast Hongkou and Yangpu districts long troubled by flooding during storms.
