New service will provide details about flight delays
The Shanghai Airport Authority is teaming up with Alibaba to begin a service that will inform passengers about flight delays.
The system will be based on Alibaba’s Internet technology and will involve all flights out of the city’s Hongqiao and Pudong airports. The goal is to prevent passengers from being stuck at the airport for long periods, said Jing Yiming, the airport authority’s president.
“The airport authority can do nothing about the flight delays, but is responsible for keeping passengers informed,” Jing said after signing a strategic cooperation agreement with Alibaba’s Ant Financial Group.
He said the authority is working closely with airlines and government bodies, but didn’t say when the platform would be launched. It will be initially available on Alibaba’s online payment service Alipay.
The airport authority will also develop an application with Alibaba’s help for visitors to the future Shanghai Disney Resort. Flights to Shanghai and Disney tickets will be sold through the app.
Li Derun, the airport authority’s board chairman, said the city’s two airports would receive about 5 million more passengers combined each year after Shanghai Disney Resort opens in 2016.
Last year, the city’s airports served 19 million passengers.
