New subsidy for city seniors but free bus ride withdrawn

Senior locals, who are 65 years old or above and with permanent residency, will be eligible for a new monthly subsidy from May 1, the city government announced today.

However, the free public transport policy for seniors above 70 will be discontinued from June 25.

The new subsidy is divided into five levels for different age groups and seniors will start receiving them in June.

Those between 65 and 69 years old will receive 75 yuan (US$11.54) per month, while those in the 70-79-year bracket will get 150 yuan.

A monthly subsidy of 180 yuan and 350 yuan will be given to seniors between 80 and 89 years old, and 90 and 99 years old, respectively.
Centenarians will receive 600 yuan per month.

About 2.8 million seniors in the city will receive the subsidy.
They will also receive a new seniors card after registering with the neighborhood committees.

Six parks including Shanghai Zoo and Guyi Garden will offer free admission for seniors who are 65 or above from May.
