New subway train model arrives for testing

A new train model for subway lines 3 and 4 has arrived in Shanghai for testing.

It’s one of 35 new trains purchased by Shanghai Metro operator Shentong Group to increase capacity on both lines.

According to a preliminary plan, eight new trains will serve Line 3 while the remaining 27 are for Line 4.

“The new trains will allow us to shorten train intervals,” said Li Yibin, a Shentong employee.

The operator didn’t say when the new train would make its debut.

The new train is 20 percent lighter than current models and uses less energy.
