New telecom scam uncovered
LOCAL police have uncovered a new telecom scam in which the caller claims to be a staffer of a power company and threatens to cut power supply for excessive use of electricity.
A woman surnamed Li went to police in Songjiang District over the weekend, saying she received a call from the "power supply company" which informed her about excessive electricity consumption and told her to pay the money through bank transfer.
She said she was told that power would be cut in her house if she didn't pay for the excessive consumption.
Police have warned residents not to trust such calls as the Shanghai Power Supply Bureau has reassured that it would not ask for extra payments over calls or messages. The bureau suggested residents ask the caller for details of their power consumption and fees.
