New type capsule endoscopy provides accurate diagnosis
A NEW generation of endoscopic capsule became available in local leading hospitals, providing patients more accurate and specific check, especially for those who can’t endure normal endoscope due to age, disease, allergy or other risks, doctors said.
In the shape of a real capsule, patients only need to swallow it with a sip of water.
Different from the first generation of endoscopic capsule whose movement only depends on gravity and the movement of patient’s own digestive system, doctors can control the new capsule like using magnet to control iron.
“We can have more careful check on key places or places suspected with problems by controlling the capsule, while patients don’t feel any pain or discomfort,” said Dr Zhu Jinshui, director of gastroenterology department at Shanghai No.6 People’s Hospital.
In addition to give patients a more comfortable choice, magnetically guided capsule endoscopy can better examine areas of the small intestine, which used to be difficult to reach for normal endoscope or first-generation of capsule endoscope.
“The technology can detect almost all bleeding in small intestines and early detection for tumor in small intestines,” Zhu said.
